He has been working in extragalactic astronomy (active star forming galaxies), astronomical instrumentation and astronomical quality of the sky. He has been the advisor of 12 PhD thesis in astronomy and of multiple graduate research works (final Degree and Master dissertations) some of them during the last years related with light pollution.

He is a teacher of the master in astrophysics at UCM. He led the Advanced Scientific Instrumentation Laboratory (LICA) of the UCM where some night sky brightness photometers are being developed. He is the coordinator of the Spanish Light Pollution Research Network and the creator of the light pollution monitoring station network in Spain and the STARS4ALL photometer network.

Zamorano has been principal investigator of projects of the National R&D Plan in Spain, projects at European level and has been involved in many others. He has been a member of the Community of Madrid networks for space instrumentation and astronomy: ASTRID (management committee), ASTROMADRID, SPACETEC and TEC2SPACE. He has participated in two instrumentation projects for GTC: EMIR and MEGARA.

Jaime Zamorano has collaborated with the Central American Astronomy Courses (IAU, UNESCO) as an organizer and guest professor. He has been a visiting professor for undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras promoting the Astronomical Observatory of Suyapa. He has also collaborated in the studies of Astronomy in Central America, participating in courses of the Central American Regional Master’s Degree in Astronomy and Astrophysics and being editor of the curriculum as a member of its Academic Coordination Committee.

Prof. Zamorano has been the founder of new research areas at the UCM, establishing a video detection station for bolides within the national SPMN network. He also leads the astronomical sky quality studies of the GUAIX group, being the IP in the UCM node of the European project ACTION developing some citizen science projects as AZOTEA or StreetSpectra.
