Jesús Gallego is Full Professor (Catedrático) at UCM. He is the coordinator of the GUAIX research group and he currently holds the position of Deputy Director of the Earth Physics and Astrophyiscs Department.

Jesús Gallego graduated in Physics in 1989 and obtained a Ph.D. in Physics in 1995 (specialty Astrophysics), obtaining the UCM Extraordinary Ph.D. Prize. After a stay as a postdoctoral researcher at the Lick Observatory at the University of California, Santa Cruz, he returned to the UCM, first as an assistant lecturer and later, as a professor. In 2018 he became Full Professor (catedrático).
He has 132 articles published with referee (ADS) and an h-index of 42 (Google Scholar). Gallego has more than 200 contributions to international congresses and he has been a referee of international journals (ApJ, AJ, MNRAS, and A&A).

Jesús Gallego has been the director of 10 doctoral theses and an extensive list of dissertations, research works, and TFMs.

He is the Spanish representative at the Board of the MOSAIC instrument for the future Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). He is also UCM representative at the Board of the TARSIS instrument for the 3.5m telescope of the Calar Alto CAHA Observatory.

  • UCM representative in the consortium for the construction contract of the MEGARA instrument for the GTC telescope (total 6.2 M€; 2010-2019).
  • Official representative of the UCM in the international consortium for the construction of the EMIR instrument for the GTC telescope.
  • National representative in the international consortium for the construction of the MOSAIC instrument for the 39m ELT telescope.
  • Principal Investigator of several projects in the area of Astronomy and Astrophysics of the National Plan (MINECO) and participant in 30. Co-IP of the international collaborations AEGIS (telescopes Keck, Hubble Space Telescope), and GOYA (instrument EMIR@GTC).
  • General coordinator of the ASTRID programme (IV Regional Plan for Science and Technology of the Community of Madrid, with fifteen centres and +100 researchers; 01/2006-12/2009).
  • Representative of the UCM in the regional networks ASTROMADRID (2010-2013), SpaceTec (2014-2018) and Tec2Space (2019-2022).
  • UCM representative, member of the management committee and responsible for education in the Consolider-Ingenio project “GTC-Consolider: First science with the GTC”. (2007-2012).
  • Ministry representative and responsible for the Spanish node of the European Commission’s ASTRONET and ELT-Prep (FP6) and ASTRONET-2 (FP7) projects.
